REP. DUTTON TO HOLD HEARING ON JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER ABUSES
HOUSTON, TX - Representative Harold V. Dutton, Jr. (Houston) today announced that the House Committee on Juvenile Justice and Family Issues (“JJFI”) will conduct a hearing on September 15, 2004, to assess the issues surrounding allegations of abuse at juvenile detention centers and halfway houses.
Earlier this year, reports of abuse led to independent investigations of Harris County’s West Dallas Juvenile Detention Center by the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission and even a Harris County Grand Jury.
“Rep. Dutton, who chairs the JJFI Committee, stated that “although other entities have reviewed the allegations of abuse and the operation of Texas’ juvenile detention centers, improvements to our current system must continue to be a top priority for the Legislature and this hearing will provide a greater understanding and awareness of the juvenile detention center issues and what, if anything, the Legislature must do to assist.”
The Committee Hearing will be held at the Houston City Hall Annex, located at 901 Bagby, Public Level Conference Room, Houston, TX and will begin at 10:00a.m. The public is invited to attend.
