El Paso Lawmaker Celebrates Court Ruling on “Sanctuary Cities” Bill
AUSTIN- State Representative Lina Ortega (El Paso) issued the following statement following yesterday’s court ruling on Senate Bill 4, the controversial “sanctuary cities” bill:
“The Order of Chief US District Judge Orlando Garcia, enjoining the implementation of SB4, is the right decision to take while our Federal Courts consider the ramifications of a very harmful law that will more likely than not be found to violate the US Constitution. The State of Texas should not be establishing its own immigration laws that interfere with the jurisdiction and authority of Federal Law enforcement.
“SB4, which is unlikely to survive the scrutiny of the Federal Courts, has already brought fear among our significant Latino population. Texas should be promoting safety and cooperation among of its residents and our local law enforcement, especially in times of crisis as we are currently experiencing with Hurricane Harvey. State officials should be assuring immigrants and their families that they can seek help without fear of deportation. The timing of the Judge’s Order is impeccable.”
Senate Bill 4 was scheduled to go into effect on September 1. El Paso County and the City of El Paso are among the many plaintiffs challenging this law in federal district court.
