Governor Signs Bill Extending Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force

Ortega Amendment to SB 17 Strengthens Task Force Membership

AUSTIN –Following yesterday’s signing of Senate Bill 17, Representative Lina Ortega released the following statement:

"I am grateful to have added an amendment to Senate Bill 17, which adds both a labor and delivery nurse and a critical care doctor to The Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force. Adding these specialists will further enhance the knowledge and experience the task force calls upon to help us understand the best ways to address the maternal mortality crisis in our state.”

The Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force was created by Senate Bill 495, 83rd Legislature, in 2013 and was to expire in 2019 absent any action by the 85th Legislature. After legislation continuing the task force had failed to pass during the regular session, the Governor added the continuation and expansion of the task force to the Special Session, allowing the Legislature another opportunity to address this critical public health issue.

Rep. Ortega filed this same policy change as House Bill 28, which passed the House unanimously during the early part of the Special Session. After HB 28 failed to receive a necessary hearing in the Senate, Rep. Ortega successfully amended this legislation onto Senate Bill 17 during the House floor consideration.
