Rep. Giddings Commemorates Nelson Mandela International Day of Service on House Floor

Austin- On the opening day of the Legislative Special Session, Rep. Helen Giddings (Dallas) commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day of Service by passing House Resolution 34. Each year, on July 18th, the world celebrates the birth of Nelson Mandela by devoting 67 minutes to helping others. This resolution honors President Mandela for his many contributions to peace and freedom around the world.

Surrounded by her colleagues, Representative Giddings expressed the importance of the day. "For 67 years, Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity, as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker, and the first democratically elected President of a free South Africa. Nelson Mandela was a moral compass in a time of intolerance and turmoil. His struggle for justice and equality for all South Africans gave rise to greater freedom for people around the world."

In addition to her work as a State Representative and business leader, Rep. Giddings serves as the Honorary Consul from Texas to South Africa, promoting trade and cultural exchanges between the two regions.

In 1995, Representative Giddings had the privilege of meeting President Mandela when she led a Texas delegation from South Africa. She described the event as "an unforgettable memory that I will cherish forever."

HR 34 recognizes Nelson Mandela International Day as an opportunity to emphasize "the ability of individuals to effect affect positive change in their communities, and it serves as a continuing reminder of the legacy of Mr. Mandela."

A tribute to Nelson Mandela will also take place at the African American Museum in Dallas from 6:30 to 8:30 PM
