REPRESENTATIVE ROBERTO R. ALONZO OF DISTRICT 104 - STANDS WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FELLOW TEXANS TO OPPOSE SB 4
Austin, Texas -- State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo applauds hundreds of community leaders and concerned Texans that came to the State Capitol yesterday and testified against SB 4 for 16 hours. Rep. Alonzo stands with these courageous citizens in their commitment against a bill that would put unnecessary stress on communities across Texas. "This bill would put the moral fabric of our great state in jeopardy and plant seeds of distrust against police and local authorities", stated Rep. Alonzo.
Senate Bill 4 would directly cause discrimination towards minorities and would also endanger the credibility and effectiveness of law enforcement officers, as well as their relationships within the communities they have sworn to protect.
The detention of minorities will unjustly overpopulate our local jails and will encroach upon rights guaranteed in both the state and federal constitutions. This in turn could make law enforcement officers and local officials subject to law suits for infringing on citizens' 4th Amendment rights.
Our local law enforcement was created to protect and serve the citizens in their community, not to serve as federal immigration agents. "We cannot allow a bill to pass that will directly pit communities against those who are supposed to protect them," said Rep. Alonzo "and we cannot require our officers to enforce an unconstitutional law."
