REP. SHAHEEN PROPOSES END TO TAXPAYER FUNDED FILM SUBSIDIES

Collin County Rep. Cites Wasteful Spending, Unsuitable Projects as Motivation Behind Bill

AUSTIN—State Representative Matt Shaheen filed H.B. 779, calling for a dismantling of the Texas Film Commission. Funded by taxpayers, the commission funds video games, movies, TV programs, and commercials, and has awarded over $70 million in taxpayer money since 2008.

"Although the goal of the commission is to encourage the film industry's expansion in Texas, studies show that a significant amount of the work would have occurred in Texas without the incentives anyway. Additionally, we've seen mostly temporary jobs created by the program," said Shaheen. A study by the Texas Comptroller's office showed that almost 90% of the jobs created through the Commission were temporary.

"This session we have important funding decisions to make for education, CPS, water, and transportation, and it’s inappropriate to take money away from families and give it to an industry that should be able to stand on its own two legs," said Shaheen.
