Rep. Herrero Files Legislation to Sustain Corpus Christi's Thriving Economy
AUSTIN - State Representative Abel Herrero, Robstown, has filed the Port Economic Prioritization Bills to help propel the Port of Corpus Christi toward continued economic prosperity.
The Port Economic Prioritization Bills seek to clarify state code, decrease extraneous contracting and filing expenses, and streamline administrative processes. The changes would help ensure smooth navigation through sometimes complex governmental requirements.
“These improvements will allow the Port of Corpus Christi and local industry to concentrate more on expansion and growth, which will steer the Coastal Bend's economy toward increased success in the future,” Rep. Herrero said.
The Port Economic Prioritization Bills consist of the following:
•HB 2591 would exempt port property used for public and government purposes from taxation, consistent with other political subdivisions of the state.
• HB 2592 would allow districts to designate an officer to deposit funds, a change that will help streamline and clarify the process.
• HB 2593 would extend the maximum franchise term for navigation districts from 30 to 50 years, anchoring these job-creating companies to our ports.
Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, McAllen, has filed companion legislation for each of these bills in the Senate.
