In Support of Israel, Representative Jeff Leach Co-Authors Critical Anti-Boycott, Divestment & Sanction Legislation
AUSTIN - Today, State Representative Jeff Leach joined legislative leaders in support of Israel by Co-Authoring House Bill 89, with lead author, State Representative Phil King. This monumental legislation, known as “Anti-Boycott, Divestment & Sanction (Anti BDS)," reinforces the Lone Star State's wholehearted and unwavering support for the State of Israel.
“As Texans, we share Israel’s longtime commitment to democratic principles and a common moral fabric on which our lands were founded and have since prospered," stated Representative Leach. “Make no mistake - Texas stands strong in its unwavering support for Israel - and through this critical legislation, we reaffirm our dedication to Israel and her interests."
House Bill 89 ensures that all businesses that contract with the state are verified as companies who have not, and will not, boycott Israel. Further, it ensures that state pension funds are not invested with rogue entities that boycott Israel.
Yoram Solomon, Member of the Board of Trustees for the Plano Independent School District, issued the following statement in support of House Bill 89: “As an Israeli and a Texan, and an elected official, it fills my heart to see such support for this legislation, and I greatly appreciate Representative Leach’s commitment to stand by Israel.”
Texas has a rich history of strategic partnership with Israel. Specifically, over 300 Texas companies conduct business in Israel, and in 2015 alone, nearly $500 million of trade was exported from Texas to Israel. House Bill 89 is largely symbolic of Texas's longtime commitment of faithfulness to our nation's strongest ally. Fourteen states have enacted similar legislation in response to discrimination based on Israel's national origin, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signaled his strong support of its passage.
Dan Prescott, Chair of the Board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, weighed in by stating, "The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas and its Jewish Community Relations Council are honored to be working with Representative Leach and many other partners to support HB 89. This important legislation strengthens the thriving economic relationship between Texas and Israel and affirms a strong Texas – Israel partnership, based on shared values, principles and aspirations."
A fourth-generation Texan, born and raised in Plano, Representative Leach is currently serving his third term in the Texas House of Representatives, where he serves as Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Urban Affairs and as a member of the House Committee on Economic & Small Business Development. Leach practices at the Texas law firm of Gray, Reed & McGraw, P.C. and specializes in general and civil commercial litigation, real estate and construction law. Representative Leach and his wife Becky, a small business owner, are the proud parents of Brady (age eight), Charlotte (age six) and Landry (age two). They are active members of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, where they have served for several years in the Young Families Ministry.
