Rep. Burkett Files Bill Banning Partial-Birth Abortion & the Sale of Fetal Tissue
Austin - Today, State Representative Cindy Burkett (Sunnyvale) filed HB 200 to ban partial-birth abortions in Texas and prohibit the sale of fetal tissue.
"While this heinous act of partial-birth abortion has been outlawed at the federal level, it has not been enforced by the federal government and Texas has been left without any enforcement mechanism," said Rep. Burkett. "HB 200 makes it a felony offense and allows the state to punish those who would take innocent life in such a barbaric way."
Partial-birth abortions were banned at the Federal level by the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 and its constitutionality was upheld by the United States Supreme Court in Gonzales v. Carhart, 2007. Additionally, HB 200 establishes a state ban on the sale of fetal tissue.
Rep. Burkett continued, "I was horrified when I saw the videos of Planned Parenthood executives discussing profiting from the sale of fetal tissues, and I thank Governor Abbott for his efforts on this important issue."
The provisions included in HB 200 were released in August 2015 along with Governor Greg Abbott's LIFE Initiative, and it is a companion to SB 8 by Senator Charles Schwertner. This bill also has the support of several pro-life organizations in Texas that have been vital to the protection of the unborn and women.
Representative Burkett is in her fourth term representing House District 113, which includes: Balch Springs, Combine, Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Rowlett, Seagoville, and Sunnyvale.
