REP. HERRERO FILES JURY EXEMPTION BILL FOR POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS
AUSTIN - State Representative Abel Herrero, Robstown, filed House Bill 1226, which would give police officers and firefighters the option to be exempt from jury service.
Police officers and firefighters are seldom picked for juries, but still spend hours in the jury selection process. If HB 1226 is passed, those wishing to be exempt would have to request the exemption on a jury form. Officers and firefighters who would like to serve on a jury or be part of the selection process could still do so.
"Police officers and firefighters demonstrate their civic duty daily," Rep. Herrero said. "This law would help ensure that the men and women who protect our communities are not taken from their posts when summoned for jury service."
Police officers and firefighters from Corpus Christi have expressed support for the proposal, as have officers and firefighters from across the state.
"The Corpus Christi Police Officers Association not only supports, but applauds Rep. Herrero’s efforts in authoring this bill," said CCPOA President Scott Leeton. "With this exemption, the house bill would allow officers to remain on the streets protecting their community."
