SPEAKER STRAUS NAMED ‘CHILDREN’S CHAMPION’

AUSTIN – Texas House Speaker Joe Straus will receive the Children’s Champion Award on Thursday from the Texas Association for the Protection of Children, which is also known as TexProtects.
The organization works to reduce and prevent child abuse and neglect through research, advocacy and education. It will present the award to Speaker Straus during its award gala in Dallas on Thursday evening.

“I am honored by this recognition,” Speaker Straus said. “This organization will continue to play a critical role as we improve our system of protecting children from abuse across the state. The Texas House is grateful for TexProtects and its supporters.”

Speaker Straus has made protecting children from abuse a top priority for the legislative session that will begin in January. Under his leadership last year, the Texas House increased funding for Child Protective Services by $231 million. In addition, in 2014, Speaker Straus created the Select Committee on Child Protection. And last year, he created the Select Committee on Mental Health, which has looked at the behavioral health needs of children who have experienced trauma.

“TexProtects is so excited to present the Honorable Joe Straus with our 2016 Children’s Champion Award,” said Madeline McClure, Founding CEO of TexProtects. “His creation of the Select Committee on Child Protection in 2014, to study child abuse- and neglect-related fatalities, laid the groundwork and research base that will inform what we expect to be a landmark legislative session on child protection issues.”

McClure continued, “Earlier this year, Speaker Straus declared that the Texas House will make child protection a top priority, no matter how complex the problem, and he has unrelentingly championed our cause through the legislative interim. This kind of unwavering focus on Texas children will ultimately save both precious lives and scarce state resources.”
