State Representative Diego Bernal's Statement on Today's TX Supreme Court Decision

"I fundamentally disagree with today's Texas Supreme Court ruling that the Texas public school finance system "meets minimum constitutional requirements." However, the court does acknowledge the obvious: that our "school children deserve better" and that the system does not serve all children equitably.

My main focus has been to identify what my district's public schools need. As of this moment, I have had conversations with educators and administrators at 43 of our district's traditional public schools, and I am on my way to visit all 55 campuses. Two things are clear. First, that educators dedicate their lives to their students. They do so much good work with what they are given. Second, however, is that we do not give our students and educators the support that they need. Our children deserve far, far better than what we are giving them.

The ruling does not absolve us from our legislative and moral duty to provide equitable educational opportunities. In fact, the ruling calls for us to implement "transformational, top-to-bottom reforms." It is now our responsibility to provide every Texas child with the educational resources they deserve rather than continue to withhold all but the bare minimum. Every child deserves better. That must be our charge; it must be our work, and it has to begin at this very moment."
