REPRESENTATIVE TONI ROSE HOSTS THE MINORITY CANCER AWARENESS LUNCHEON AT TEXAS CAPITOL
Experts from Cancer Treatment and Minority Health Disparities Identify Challenges / Innovations
AUSTIN, TX - On Thursday, March 31, 2016, State Representative Toni Rose (Dallas, District 110) will host five expert panelists to discuss the dynamics of cancer health disparities in minority populations as related to studies, diagnosis and treatment. Innovative solutions to the latest challenges will accentuate this forward thinking dialogue, highlighting April as Minority Cancer Awareness Month.
This year, the Moncrief Cancer Institute is supporting Minority Cancer Awareness Month by rolling their custom built, 18 wheel Mobile Cancer Survivor Clinic from Fort Worth to Austin. “The mobile clinic’s state-of-the-art telecommunication capability enables our physicians, cancer psychologists, genetic counselors and other specialists to provide consultations for rural patients through secure video-conferencing technology,” said Dr. Keith Argenbright, Director of the Moncrief Cancer Institute. This one of a kind, $1.1 million dollar mobile unit will be the site of a 10:30 a.m. press conference and tour.
"For many years, cancer treatment disparities among minority populations went unrecognized by the general population. I hope to continue the act of bringing awareness to these issues," State Representative Toni Rose said. "I am honored to have been entrusted with this charge by Representative McClendon."
The luncheon, for House members and staff, carries on an annual event envisioned and founded by State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon. In 2011, Representative McClendon dedicated April as Minority Cancer Awareness Month in Texas with House Bill 114. Representative McClendon, a cancer survivor, retired from the Texas House of Representatives this year after 20 years of service.
