Constitutional Amendments on the November Ballot; Amendment No. 2
Austin, TX - State Representative James White encourages Southeast Texans to inform themselves, along with their family and friends, about the upcoming constitutional amendments on the November ballot. It is crucial for citizens to know how these referendums will affect their households, communities, and our State.
The second constitutional amendment, also known as Proposition 2, provides for a property tax exemption for the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran who died before the law authorizing a residence homestead exemption for such a veteran took effect.
"In 2011, voters approved a constitutional amendment to allow a surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran a property tax exemption, as long as the surviving spouse had not remarried. The amendment did not apply to surviving spouses of veterans who died before 2011. The Legislature addressed this concern with the passage of HJR 75 but ultimately the power to provide this relief to the surviving spouses of our veterans rests with the voters," said Rep. White.
It is too late to register for the November election but citizens may register to vote for upcoming elections at this address: http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/reqvr.shtml.
