Governor Signs Freshman Representative’s Second and Third Bills
Austin, Texas -- Last week, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 1987 and House Bill 644 into law, making these the second and third bills sponsored and joint-authored, respectively, by Representative Ina Minjarez to be signed into law.
Senate Bill 1987: Authored by Senator José Menéndez and sponsored by Representative Minjarez in the House, SB 1987 provides specialty license plates for Texas drivers who are deaf or have hearing impairments to help diffuse communication barriers between them and law enforcement officers on the road. The bill becomes effective on January 1, 2016
House Bill 644: Joint-authored by Representatives Minjarez and Canales, D-Edinburg, House Bill 644 makes it more difficult for law enforcement officers to forge a signature on a search warrant, further protecting Texans from illegal search and seizure. This bill becomes effective on September 1, 2015.
“I’m proud to have worked with members of both the House and the Senate to sponsor, joint-author and co-author so many pieces of good legislation during my extremely short time representing House District 124 at the Capitol. My team and I truly hit the ground running, getting to work for House District 124, Bexar County and Texas,” Representative Minjarez said.
Rep. Minjarez was the last member to join the 84th Legislative Session, taking the oath of office on April 30, 2015. Representative Minjarez was able to sponsor eight senate bills and co-author 48 house bills in her short time at the Capitol. She also amended several other bills to help advance her legislative agenda, which focused on public education, transportation, seniors, veterans and business opportunities.
