Rep. Thompson Nominates Christiana Taylor for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship
PEARLAND, Texas: Representative Ed Thompson announced today the District 29 nomination of Christiana Taylor for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship. Taylor, a Pearland resident, is a magna cum laude graduate of the Pearland High School Class of 2015.
The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) provides financial opportunities for dedicated students seeking a college education and a career in military service. The TASSP encourages students to participate in the Texas Guard, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, or to become commissioned officers in the United States armed services. The $40,000 scholarship provides recipients with awards of up to $10,000 per academic year for up to four years toward undergraduate education at any Texas university with an active ROTC program. Taylor, daughter of Lance and Gemma Taylor, is a freshman at Texas Tech University where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
Taylor has served in the Texas Army National Guard since February 2014, and her current rank is Private First Class. A member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar, she served as the Battalion Commander of Pearland High School Junior ROTC during her senior year. Taylor says that she wanted to serve her country since she was in the first grade, and is grateful for the opportunity to make her dream a reality.
"Miss Taylor is an impressive young lady with a bright future ahead of her. I am humbled by her determination to serve our country, and her strong leadership," said Rep. Thompson. "She is an incredibly intelligent and driven individual, and I am glad to nominate her for the TASSP scholarship."
To receive the scholarship, a student must be appointed by a state legislator or by the Governor or Lieutenant Governor, meet the academic eligibility requirements, enroll in an ROTC and agree to complete four years of training, graduate in no more than six years, and enter into a four-year commitment with any branch of the armed services following graduation.
