PRE-K BILL FILED BY REP. LUCIO PASSES HOUSE
AUSTIN -- House Bill 731, filed by Representative Eddie Lucio III, was placed on the Local and Consent Calendar this week and was passed by the House. H.B. 731 would qualify Cameron County to use savings from the early graduation program created for a cost-neutral pre-kindergarten program.
"This bill creates a pilot program taking the savings from early high school graduation and puts them toward funding prekindergarten," Rep. Lucio said. "This is bracketed exclusively to Cameron County."
Governor Abbott made early childhood education an emergency item during his State of the State address in February. High schools within District 38 have a successful early graduation program, with over 500 graduates so far and 140 projected for this school year, and this legislation will only add to the benefits of this program.
"Given the amount of comprehensive research we have proving the positive effects of prekindergarten programs on the success of young children, we have a perfect, cost-neutral opportunity to take advantage of school districts' current savings," Rep. Lucio said.
The bill is now being sent to the Senate after passing the House.
