Statement from State Representative Justin Rodriguez on $3 Billion Public Education Proposal

AUSTIN—Today, State Representative Justin Rodriguez released the following statement in support of Representative Jimmie Don Aycock’s proposal to increase spending on public schools to $3 billion:

In yesterday’s San Antonio Express-News, I wrote that Texas has historically neglected to invest in itself, and today, I’m pleased to see a proposal from Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock that does just that. I’ve always been a proponent of proactively solving the problems with our school finance system during the legislative session, rather than waiting for a court to confirm what we already know — that we can do better. This is our chance to do right by the children of Edgewood ISD, Northside ISD, San Antonio ISD, and all the school districts across the state where students are packed into crowded classrooms, waiting for the resources they deserve. Increasing the basic allotment will help all districts, whether wealthy or poor, urban or suburban. While I would like to see it go even further, this proposal is a good start. Investing in our kids is how we build tomorrow’s Texas, and the more we’re willing to invest, the brighter our future will be.
