State Representative Angie Chen Button Files Economic Development Reform Package
(AUSTIN, TX) Today, State Representative Angie Chen Button filed HB 26, HB 27, and HB 28. This legislation lays the groundwork for Economic Development reform in Texas. The reform package eliminates the Emerging Technology Fund, restructures the Texas Enterprise Fund, and takes measures to increase transparency and efficiency. Button proposes all economic development programs go through a regular independent audit and for the elimination of underutilized programs. The legislation includes the creation of an Economic Incentive Oversight Board charged with regularly reviewing programs, participating in the awards process, and forming metrics to evaluate the success of programs.
Representative Button currently serves as Chair of the Economic and Small Business Development Committee and served as Chair of the Select Committee on Economic Development Incentives during the interim. The Select Committee on Economic Development Incentives worked to identify areas that the state could improve. According to Button, “The Economic Development reform package filed today picks up many of the key issues identified by the Select Committee. I look forward to working with my colleagues, chambers of commerce, and with all Texans to ensure that we remain a leader in job creation while making sure each tax dollar spent brings a return.”
