VanDeaver appointed to two key House committees
AUSTIN—Texas House Speaker Joe Straus announced committee appointments for the 84th Texas Legislature, naming District 1 State Rep. Gary VanDeaver (New Boston) to the House Committees on Appropriations and Public Education.
“Being appointed to the powerful Appropriations Committee is a great honor. This committee is charged with the important responsibility of writing the state budget, and I plan to work for a budget that is lean, responsible, and balanced,” said VanDeaver.
Only three House freshmen were selected to serve on the Appropriations Committee. VanDeaver brings to the committee a background as a respected school administrator, where he balanced and managed budgets for several years.
VanDeaver will also serve on the Public Education Committee, which is charged with oversight of public education in the state. “There are many important issues facing our public schools right now, from school finance to what takes place in the classroom. As a career educator, I am enthusiastic about achieving solutions that will improve our schools and provide Texas students with the educational opportunities they deserve,” said VanDeaver.
The Appropriations and Public Education Committees are among the most powerful and demanding in the House. “I am honored by the confidence shown me by the House leadership and am ready to roll up my sleeves and go to work for the people of Northeast Texas,” said VanDeaver.
VanDeaver is serving his first term in the Texas House, representing Bowie, Franklin, Lamar, and Red River Counties.
