BURROWS FILES BILL TO HELP PROTECT FARMERS AND THAT THEY RECEIVE FULL CREDIT AND PAYMENT FOR THE CROPS THEY PRODUCE

AUSTIN, TX – State Representative Dustin Burrows filed House Bill 1848 to protect the investment of a farmer that would designate the farmer’s financial interest in their product as superior to a subsequent purchaser. Representative Burrows offered the following statement:
“Our farmers invest an immense amount of time, work, and financial resources into producing their crops. They do this to feed their families, while also serving as economic engines for our region and it is important that we work to protect their investment to ensure that they get paid in the event of financial tumult on behalf of the processing facility, bank, or other lender.”
Representative Burrows recently represented almost four hundred farmers in a court case in his private practice where farmers were almost bankrupted because of non-payment, which would have been devastating to our agriculture industry.
“Often times, the farmers give their crop to a gin or processing facility and get paid for their product after that facility processes the product and sells it. If the gin or processing facility fails between the times of when a farmer delivers the product and when they get paid for their product, farmers could be left without their crop or payment. This could leave farmers with a whole year's worth of work and nothing to show for it which in turn can cause farms, many being multi-generational, be forced to shut down and be sold off,” stated Representative Burrows.
Many agricultural leaders have expressed interest in this legislation as a way to protect not only their livelihood but also their role in the economy of rural Texas.
