Representative John Raney Appointed to House Select Committee on Health Care Education and Training

(AUSTIN, TEXAS) State Representative John Raney (Bryan) has been appointed to the newly created House Select Committee on Health Care Education and Training by Speaker Joe Straus.

The committee will focus on preparing more Texans for careers in the state’s growing health sector. Committee members will assess the demand for health professionals across the state, and examine ways to better align public schools and colleges and universities with the needs of health care employers.

"This issue is critically important to the Bryan-College Station area," Representative Raney said. "Our community stands to benefit a great deal from the findings of this committee and I am confident there are opportunities that will address the workforce needs of Texas."

"I am honored to serve on this committee, and look forward to working with Chairman King and the other members of this committee to find the solutions we need."

Texas faces severe shortages in the health sector. Of the state’s 254 counties, 177 were designated all or partial Health Professional Shortage Areas this year by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. Many of the jobs that see persistent shortages do not require four-year college degrees.

“The strength of our health care workforce directly impacts the quality of care that Texans receive,” said Speaker Straus. “It also matters a great deal to our economy. Too many health jobs are unfilled, while too many Texans are not prepared to succeed in the workforce. The work of this committee will help more Texans prepare for successful careers in a very important field.”

The committee will prepare recommendations for the Legislature to help strengthen the state’s health care workforce, which will lead to better care for patients and better career opportunities for many Texans.

Representative Raney represents District 14 in the Texas House of Representatives, including the cities of Bryan and College Station. He also serves on the Committees on Appropriations, Higher Education, and House Administration.
