Texas Sunset Advisory Commission Wins Certificate of Impact
AUSTIN - Texas State Senator Jane Nelson and Representative Four Price are proud to congratulate the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission on being selected as a winner of a 2014 National Legislative Program Evaluation Society (NLPES) Certificate of Impact. NLPES, which is affiliated with the National Conference of State Legislatures, recognized the Sunset Advisory Commission for "its demonstration of significant impact on state government."
"Congratulations to the Sunset commission for this well-deserved recognition," said Senator Nelson, Chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission. "As Chair of the Sunset Commission, I appreciate the impact its work has on our state government, and I am pleased to see it recognized on a national level. The Sunset process has led to more efficient government for those who rely on state services and achieved savings for the taxpayers of this state."
"This recent prestigious national award continues the fine tradition of high accolades and honors bestowed to the Sunset commission staff. Texas is blessed to have a professional Sunset staff that is dedicated to the well-being of Texas, today and in the future. Thank you for setting the gold standard among your professional peers," said Representative Price, Vice Chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission.
The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission is a 12-member legislative commission and employs a director who hires an independent staff to conduct Sunset reviews of about 130 state agencies and other government entities. About 20 to 30 agencies go through the Sunset process each biennium, with each agency typically undergoing a Sunset review once every 12 years. Since Sunset's inception in 1977, the process has streamlined and changed state government, including abolishing 79 agencies with a fiscal impact of almost $1 billion saved. Every dollar spent on the Sunset process has earned the state approximately $25 in return.
