Rep. Donna Howard Kicks Off Women's Health Tour
AUSTIN - On Tuesday, Rep. Donna Howard led the El Paso stop of the Women's Health Tour, a statewide series of listening sessions hosted by Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives.
The public forum provided an opportunity for community members to share with legislators their experiences and concerns on family planning and women's health issues. Attendees also heard from a group of featured speakers, including a New Mexico State Representative, a community health educator, and a local OB/GYN.
Joining Rep. Howard at the event were members of the El Paso legislative delegation: Reps. Mary González, Marisa Márquez, and Joe Moody, as well as Sen. José Rodriguez.
Rep. Howard released the following statement:
“I am grateful to the community members who turned out for the first stop of the Women's Health Tour. Their comments provided an invaluable perspective and a clear frustration with lawmakers' involvement in women's personal medical decisions.
"Despite partisan portrayals, women's health involves so much more than just abortion. Attendees shared stories of how legislative actions are impacting mental health, medical training, and access to vital preventive care.
"The event served as a reminder that our work at the State Capitol has impacts that can reach beyond our Texas borders. When we limit health care options for Texas women, we are also limiting those options for women in surrounding states.
"I invite citizens to join us at the remaining six stops of the Women's Health Tour, and ask for their participation on these important issues."
Rep. Howard will be attending each leg of the Women's Health Tour. In addition to El Paso, the tour will make stops in Dallas, McAllen, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Houston, and Galveston. It will run from late-July to mid-August, and additional details can be found at www.facebook.com/TXWomenFight.
