Texas State Rep. Alonzo Today Applauds Appt. of Julian Castro as HUD Secretary
~Former San Antonio Mayor Takes Help of US Housing Federal Agency ~
AUSTIN, TX -- State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo today joined the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) of which he is a member, and several other organizations nationwide, applauding the appointment and confirmation yesterday of former San Antonio Mayor, Julian Castro as the new Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, DC.
" I applaud the overwhelming confirmation yesterday by the US Senate of former San Antonio mayor, Julian Castro as our new Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Judging from his previous track record of success and accomplishments as mayor of the 7th largest city in the United States, I am confident Mr. Castro will make an excellent HUD Secretary. When you examine his strong stance and advocacy on issues such as homelessness, responsible home ownership, job creation and city revitalization, there is no doubt in my mind that new Secretary Castro will use that same visionary leadership, skills and unique abilities to work across party lines, to move forward and tackle our nation's issues in this area," said Rep. Alonzo.
Castro will be only the third Latino in President Obama's second-term cabinet.
Castro will head a federal agency begun in 1965 by another Texan, former President Lyndon B. Johnson, as part of Johnson’s Great Society. HUD has a $49 billion budget. Most importantly Castro enters the agency with the economy and housing on stronger footing than when current Secretary Shaun Donovan took the helm.
