Rep. Thompson Nominates University of Houston Student, Tyler Tanner, for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship
PEARLAND, Texas: Representative Ed Thompson announced today the District 29 nomination of Tyler Tanner for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship. Tanner, a Pearland resident and 2012 graduate of Bay Area Christian School, is currently studying Earth Science at the University of Houston.
The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) provides financial opportunities for dedicated students seeking a college education and a career in military service. The TASSP encourages students to participate in the Texas Guard, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, or to become commissioned officers in the United States armed services. The $40,000 scholarship provides recipients with awards of up to $10,000 per academic year for up to four years toward undergraduate education at any Texas university with an active ROTC program.
After graduating from high school with a 4.123 GPA, Tyler Tanner enrolled in the University of Houston and joined the Rice University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. Tanner has taken several naval science classes through the program so far and has participated in two summer naval trainings - one in San Diego, California, and one on board the USS Olympia submarine. In addition to his full-time course load at the university and with the Rice Naval ROTC, Tanner works on campus to help support himself through college.
"Mr. Tanner has set himself apart as a strong, young leader who is prepared and eager to serve his country," said Rep. Thompson. "He is an incredibly dedicated and goal-directed individual deserving of this nomination and distinction."
To receive the scholarship, a student must be appointed by a state legislator or by the Governor or Lieutenant Governor, meet the academic eligibility requirements, enroll in an ROTC and agree to complete four years of training, graduate in no more than six years, and enter into a four-year commitment with any branch of the armed services following graduation. Upon graduation, Tanner plans to pursue a commission as a naval aviator for the US Navy.
