STRAUS NAMES COMMITTEE ON JUDICIAL SELECTION
AUSTIN -- Texas House Speaker Joe Straus named 6 legislators Friday to the Joint Interim Committee on Judicial Selection.
The committee, created during the 2013 regular legislative session, will study and review the methods by which judges -- including appellate court justices and judges, district court judges and statutory county and probate court judges -- are selected in this state.
“Some of our most prominent current and former judges have been strong advocates for reforming our judicial selection process,” said Straus. “I am optimistic that this committee will proposeimprovements to the selection process to ensure a highly qualified judiciary.”
Rep. Tryon Lewis (Odessa) will serve as the committee's co-chair. The committee also includes Reps. Abel Herrero (Robstown), Nicole Collier (Fort Worth), Geanie Morrison (Victoria), Justin Rodriguez (San Antonio) and Kenneth Sheets (Dallas).
The 84th Texas Legislature will convene in January 2015.
