Burkett Appointed to Texas Sunset Advisory Commission
AUSTIN, TEXAS — Texas Speaker of the House, Joe Straus (San Antonio) today announced his appointments to the Sunset Advisory Commission. State Representative Cindy Burkett (Sunnyvale) was among those honored with an appointment to this important committee.
"Representative Burkett is an emerging leader in the Texas House," Speaker Straus said. "Colleagues respect her because she's smart and always well-prepared. Those strengths will serve her well as she and other members of the Sunset Commission work to make state government more efficient, transparent and effective."
"As someone who manages businesses, I understand the importance of maximizing efficiency. My appointment to the Sunset Advisory Commission allows me greater participation in the oversight of our state's agencies. I’m honored to have this opportunity to ensure that our government is the leanest and most efficient it can be." Rep. Burkett stated.
The Sunset Advisory Commission was created by the Texas Legislature in 1977 to identify and eliminate waste, duplication, and inefficiency in government agencies. The 12-member Commission reviews the policies and programs of more than 150 government agencies over a 12-year cycle. The Commission questions the need for each agency, identifies potential duplication of other public services or programs, and considers new and innovative changes to improve each agency's operations and activities. The Commission seeks public input through hearings on every agency under Sunset review and recommends actions on each agency to the full Legislature. In most cases, agencies under Sunset review are automatically abolished unless legislation is enacted to continue them.
Representative Burkett is serving her second term representing House District 113, which includes Balch Springs, Combine, Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Rowlett, Seagoville, and Sunnyvale.
