Rep. Workman Joins Holiday Campaign to Prevent Drunk Driving
AUSTIN – State Representative Paul Workman is pleased to join the Texas Hospitality Association and the Texas Department of Transportation on a holiday campaign aimed at preventing drunk driving. The Holiday P.A.S.S. (Person Appointed to Stay Sober) campaign encourages Texans to give the gift of a sober ride home and to make it easier for sober drivers to enjoy festivities without drinking alcohol.
"The gift of a sober ride can help ensure that all Texans get home safely this holiday season," said Rep. Workman. "Give the gift of a sober ride home or add a sober drive to your own holiday wish list."
As part of the campaign, the Texas Hospitality Association will distribute over 3 million bottle tags to businesses that sell adult beverages and over half a million bill inserts for restaurants, bars, and clubs to include with a patron's tab. Individuals can also visit the association website at www.TexasHospitalityAssocation.com to print off their own sober driver "gift certificate" to include with alcoholic drinks.
Texans can also use the TxDOT website www.SoberRides.org to find a safe ride home. It provides users with information on nearby cabs, public transportation, limo services, and pedicabs, along with walking maps, help phoning a friend, and more.
"The Holiday P.A.S.S. campaign encourages individuals to prevent drunk driving by planning ahead," said Rep. Workman. "If you know you will be drinking alcohol, designate a sober driver in advance. If you are hosting a party, make sure to offer alcohol-free options for sober drivers."
Holiday drinking and driving poses a serious threat for all holiday travelers on the road. During last year's holiday season (December 1, 2012, to January 1, 2013), there were 776 DWI-alcohol-related crashes in Texas, resulting in 239 serious injuries and 78 fatalities – a 21.8 percent increase in fatalities compared with the previous holiday season. Law enforcement officers throughout the state will work thousands of additional hours this holiday season to crack down on drunk driving, including implementing no-refusal policies in many metropolitan areas.
