State Rep. Dwayne Bohac Named
"Champion for Public Education" by the Houston Asian Chamber of Commerce

HOUSTON, TX -- Today, State Representative Dwayne Bohac (Houston) was named “Champion for Public Education” by the Houston Asian Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented to Bohac for his commitment to using innovative strategies and to creating an education “marketplace” to ensure that all Texas children receive a high quality education.

"Public Education has always been a major focus of mine throughout my career," said Rep. Bohac. "The Texas Model of job creation and commerce has become the blueprint for the rest of the country to follow. But for our state to continue to prosper, we must provide business and industry with a world-class, skilled workforce, and that starts with our public education system."

The Houston Asian Chamber of Commerce has the dual purpose of promoting trade between Houston and Asia and fostering economic development in the Houston area Asian-American communities. There are currently over 200 members.

"Our state needs a singular public education mission: At graduation, students are expected to be prepared for military service, a technical school, a two-year college or a four-year university without remedial education. While it's our goal to make sure every child is prepared to attend a four year college or university, the reality is that many will enter the workforce right out of high school and they need to be educated and skilled," Rep. Bohac said. "To achieve this goal, we must think beyond the traditional education model that is currently accepted. We must integrate best practices that have been proven to work, like instituting a culture of high expectations, ensuring strong campus leadership and powerful teacher collaboration, requiring parent commitment and implementing extended learning time. This session, I was proud to author and sponsor legislation that establishes the Expanded Learning Opportunities Council to study issues concerning expanded learning opportunities for Texas public school students like an extended school day or an extended school year or through structured learning programs outside the regular school day. If our children need an extra block of math, science, or language, it is incumbent upon us to see that they receive what they need to be successful."

Rep. Bohac has been recognized by the Texas PTA as a member of their Legislative Honor Roll and by his colleagues in the Texas House with the "Education Advocate Award" for his commitment to public education and the students and teachers of this state. He recently authored an article that was published in the Houston Chronicle titled, "To Best Teach Our Children, We Need a Diverse Marketplace." The article focuses on the need to introduce innovative ideas and best practices into educating our children because the "one-size-fits-all" model often times does not work due to the diversity of student-customers in the education economy.
