SPEAKER STRAUS APPOINTS REP. MUÑOZ TO THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION FUNDING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AT STAKE
THE TEXAS CAPITOL, AUSTIN – With the eyes of Texas poised on the State Legislature as it makes a fourth attempt to settle badly needed transportation funding, House Speaker Joe Straus today appointed State Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. to the Select Committee on Transportation Funding.
The committee is tasked with creating a consensus funding solution for the state's aging transportation infrastructure. The challenge is to create a funding mechanism that allocates significant revenue, in the neighborhood of $1 billion per year, to the state's transportation infrastructure, without increases taxes or fees.
With two special sessions now under their belt, Governor Perry has called a 3rd Special Session of the Legislature to settle the issue. Perry's Legislative call came just minutes after the House & Senate adjourned the 2nd Special Session without a solution to the transportation funding issue.
"I am honored to be called upon to work with my colleagues in the Legislature on this very pressing issue. It will take the right mix of Rainey Day Fund dollars, allocations, and a vote of the people, as well as a lot of level heads to reach an agreement on how to proceed," said Muñoz.
"Rest assured that I will continue to make public education my first priority, followed closely by a host of human services programs; but we cannot abandon a strategy to spur economic activity, which in turn very quickly funds the State’s priorities… developing and maintaining transportation infrastructure is within that strategy. I also believe that providing a responsible funding stream for transportation projects increases public safety by establishing an efficient and safe transportation infrastructure system," continued Muñoz.
