AUSTIN, TX – Texas House Speaker Joe Straus has named State Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. to the powerful House Appropriations Committee, the Insurance Committee, and the Local and Consent Calendar Committee. These key appointments will put Representative Muñoz in a prime position to effect funding for programs critical to the Valley, and will place him in a unique position to effect legislation.

"I am deeply honored and very pleased to be given such an important role by Speaker Straus," said Representative Muñoz after receiving his assignments. "It is a privilege to have the capacity to better serve my district through the work done in these Committees. I plan to represent the interests of the constituents in my district and the greater Rio Grande Valley throughout my service on the Appropriations, Insurance, and Local and Consent Calendar Committees," Rep. Muñoz added.

The Committees to which Rep. Muñoz was assigned have authority over a variety of issues.

•Appropriations Committee - Jurisdiction over all bills and resolutions appropriating money from the state treasury, which will allow Rep. Muñoz to influence funding for key health and human services and education programs for the Valley.

•Insurance Committee - Jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to insurance and the insurance industry, as well as the following state agencies: the Texas Department of Insurance, the Texas Health Benefits Purchasing Cooperative, and the Office of Public Insurance Counsel. Rep. Muñoz will have the opportunity to effect insurance policy structure, rates, and coverage, which affects everybody in District 36.

•Local & Consent Calendar Committee - Jurisdiction over the flow of legislation to the House floor for bills that are local in character or uncontested; the appointment will endow Rep. Muñoz with the power to impact a myriad of bills of importance to local communities.
