CITIES OF MCALLEN & PHARR AWARDED FEDERAL/STATE FUNDS TO ENHANCE HIKE & BIKE TRAILS FOR SAFETY, HEALTH, AND BEAUTIFICATION
THE TEXAS CAPITOL, AUSTIN – State Representative Sergio Muñoz Jr. is pleased to announce the award of Transportation Enhancement Program funds for two local projects in McAllen and Pharr. The Texas Transportation Commission awarded the funds by minute order this week with the support of Rep. Muñoz.
"I am so excited to announce these enhancement funds for two of my constituent cities in a very competitive statewide process," said Muñoz. "The Transportation Enhancement Program uses federal money to fund eligible projects from around the state, then the Transportation Commission after a rigorous review, selects the awardees. We should all be very proud of the city administrators who crafted these very viable applications, resulting in more than $1.6 million to provide safe, healthy venues for the community to enjoy," added Muñoz.
The funds supporting this grant program are derived from federal sources and will be made available to the cities as a reimbursement as the project is constructed. The cities will receive 80 percent of the project as a reimbursement.
The City of McAllen's award of $1,020,265 is for the Bentsen Road Hike and Bike Trail and plans include a project that would construct a mutli-use pedestrian and bicycle trail with amenities and landscaping, connecting residential neighborhoods, parks, schools and other points of interest along Bentsen Road from Pecan Boulevard (FM 495) to Nolana Avenue.
The City of Pharr's award of $644,138 is for the Bicycle Accessible Improvement Project and includes twenty two miles of bicycle lanes that promote safety and healthy lifestyles.
"These types of grants are a very welcome bonus for our communities here in Deep South Texas," added Muñoz. "They provide another source of funding for safe and healthy alternatives right here at home."
