Burkett Appointed to Select Committee on Transportation Funding
(AUSTIN, TX) - Yesterday, Governor Perry announced the third called session of the 83rd Legislature to consider legislation relating to the funding of transportation infrastructure projects.
Following the announcement of the third called session, House Speaker Joe Straus appointed Representative Cindy Burkett (Sunnyvale) to the House Select Committee on Transportation Funding to address transportation issues that are placed on the call. The Select Committee will have its first meeting tomorrow, Thursday, August 1st in Austin.
Representative Burkett has been active in this session working on transportation related issues and funding mechanisms to shore up the state's transportation needs.
According to a June 2013 TxDOT report, road capacity has not kept pace with population growth. From 1991 - 2011, population in Texas increased by 49%, while highway miles increased only 4% during the same period. TxDOT maintains nearly 80,000 highway lane miles. TxDOT Executive Director Phil Wilson testified in February 2013 that a $4 billion increase in funding is needed for the next biennium − $3 billion for new construction and $1 billion for maintenance − to meet the demands of the state transportation system.
Representative Burkett said, "I am hopeful that the Legislature can find a responsible solution to truly address Texas’ growing transportation needs with a long-term plan. I am honored to a part of this committee and look forward to continuing to work on such an important issue."
