REP. EDDIE LUCIO III COMMENDS GOV. RICK PERRY ON HIS 7TH STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS
On Tuesday morning, Governor Rick Perry was on the House floor to present his State of the State Address. In his speech, he mentioned the importance of South Texas’s education and the investment needed in this area.
"Today, the students of South Texas are able to stay closer to home to earn their college degrees. This area of the state is critical to our state's future, and our investment in the children of South Texas will be returned a thousand-fold.” said Gov. Perry. "That's why I'm calling for the legislature to pass, by a two-thirds vote, a bill necessary to give South Texas access to the Permanent University Fund."
Rep. Lucio joined Texas House Members in applauding Gov. Perry’s remarks. On this special day, the State Capitol celebrated “Brownsville Day.” A delegation from the City of Brownsville including the Mayor, a couple of City Commissioners, Cameron County Treasurer, as well as several other public officials from the city visited the Capitol.
"It is an enormous privilege for Gov. Perry to point out South Texas in his State of the State address. I hope members of the legislature share his commitment to improve our region’s educational and financial needs. Today marks an important day in South Texas history as we plan out a project to merge two universities and bring a medical school to the region.” said Rep. Lucio.
The University of Texas at Brownsville, the University of Texas-Pan American, and the Regional Academic Health Center will present to the legislature a plan to merge the three schools in to what is hoped to be a University of Las Americas.
