REP. LUCIO RECOGNIZES SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
As some of you may know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness and to educate communities & individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. In light of this, this week's newsletter centers on the work of my office and of other's in the community dedicated to preventing such injustices.
I am a strong supporter of legislation, programs and initiatives that aim towards curbing crime and domestic violence.
During the 82nd session, with the support of the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV). I authored and passed HB 1721 which creates a protective order for victims of stalking to receive the same protections afforded to victims of family violence. Previously, state law only provided protective orders for victims of physical family violence and sexual assault. Victims of stalking experience similar fear and isolation and are now able to be protected by this court order. Additionally, HB 1721 now allows statements made by children under 14 years old to be admissible as evidence in court.
In addition to the work my office has accomplished, I'd especially like to take this opportunity to salute and congratulate Dr. Nora Montalvo-Liendo, assistant professor in the College of Nursing at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College on her appointment to the Texas Council on Family Violence - Public Policy Committee. I know that the TCFV will benefit from her expertise and experience as an expert in this field.
Since 1978, the TCFV has been a nationally recognized leader in the efforts to end family violence through partnerships, advocacy and direct services for women, children and men.
Each legislative session the TCFV brings together a varied group of victims, advocates, law enforcement officials, prosecutors, issue experts and others to serve on the Public Policy Committee. The Committee provides advice and analysis on potential TCFV legislative agenda items. I applaud the TCFV for their work
It is thanks to collaborations like this that we are able to identify shortfalls and create constructive legislation that benefits our District. Again, congratulations to Dr. Nora Montalvo-Liendo and to all of those who work so tirelessly for these causes.
