State Representative John Raney (Bryan) Joins Newly Formed Texas House Farm-to-Table Caucus

(AUSTIN, TEXAS) Texas State Representative John Raney (Bryan) announced today that he has joined the Texas House Farm-to-Table Caucus. The Caucus is a bipartisan organization for legislators interested in public policy relating to the production, distribution and consumption of Texas foods as well as issues relating to obesity, food security and the availability of fresh and healthy foods. The Caucus is the first state legislative caucus of its kind in the nation.

“The recent boom in interest in local and sustainable food and the increase in obesity present challenges and opportunities for the Legislature,” said Representative Raney. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House Farm-to-Table Caucus to help our state’s small farms while helping Texans to be healthier. This issue has the potential to be the textbook definition of a ‘win-win’ for Texas.”

The rise in those seeking fresh, local foods has caused an increase in family farms statewide. With this growth comes the need for Texas Legislators to take a closer look at the laws and regulations governing local food production and distribution in Texas. As recent House Committee hearings have indicated, these laws are becoming outdated and may prove to be inhibiting growth and access to fresh food.

The Caucus is chaired by Representative Eddie Rodriguez (Austin) and Vice Chaired by Representative Lois Kolkhorst (Brenham).

"We are proud to have Representative Raney join the Farm-to-Table Caucus," said Representative Eddie Rodriguez, Chairman of the Caucus. "We look forward to working with our state's urban and small family farms, restaurants and distribution networks to help ensure everyone has access to fresh and healthy Texas food."
