FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 01/19/2003
78th Legislative Session Opens
I would like to thank the citizens of Fannin and Grayson Counties for the opportunity to serve as your State Representative. Capitol Watch is a weekly column intended to keep you informed of issues your State Legislature is dealing with in Austin. I encourage your feedback on these issues.
The 78th Legislative Session opened on Tuesday, January 14th with swearing-in ceremonies in both the House of Representatives and Senate . During the first day of business, the members of the House of Representatives elected a new House Speaker for the Session, Rep. Tom Craddick of Midland. Speaker Craddick’s election marked the end of Rep. Pete Laney’s (Hale Center) 5-term tenure as House Speaker.
One of the first orders of business for the new Speaker of the House will be to assign members to committees. The House contains forty committees and members will spend their entire two-year term serving on the committee to which they are assigned. Committee assignments are expected within the next two weeks.
My Austin office is staffed and is ready to assist constituents with questions dealing with legislation that may come before the House or with any problems that may be encountered with State agencies. Mike Barnett is my Chief of Staff and will also be in charge of legislative duties in my office. Mike worked in former-State Representative Ron Clark’s Austin and Sherman offices as Legislative Director.
Sara Hays will work as my Administrative Assistant, handling day-to-day operations of the office as well as assisting constituents with inquiries and concerns. Sara previously worked for three years with former-Speaker Pro-Tempore Tom Uher of Bay City as Legislative Aide.
Rounding out my staff is Suzanne Tomlin who will serve as my Legislative/Administrative Assistant and will assist constituents with both legislative issues and problems with State agencies. Suzanne worked as a research assistant with Rep. Mary Denny of Denton since 1999 before joining my staff.
I am proud of the staff we have assembled and look forward to working as a team on behalf of the citizens of District 62. Again, I encourage you to contact me with your questions or comments. You can reach me by phone at (512) 463-0297, by writing to P.O. Box 2910, Austin, TX 78768-2910 or by e-mailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
