TEXAS ARMED SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION TO CADET LILIANA CHAVEZ
THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS PAN AMERICAN - State Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. today had the honor of presenting the Texas Armed Services Scholarship award to Cadet Liliana Chavez on the UTPA campus. Cadet Chavez is a UTPA freshman student enrolled in the ROTC program and was nominated for the scholarship by Rep. Muñoz. The scholarship provides up to $15,000 each academic year for up to five years toward undergraduate education.
Rep. Muñoz listed several of Cadet Chavez' impressive achievements, saying that "Cadet Chavez not only met all the qualifications, graduating 5th in her class with a 3.78 GPA, but has also given back to her community, volunteering for the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank and participating with the Beach cleanup and Toys for Tots. It was a privilege to nominate Cadet Chavez; she has proven herself to be an asset to our community and is very deserving of the award."
Muñoz was quick to share the prestige and honor associated with the Texas Armed Services Scholarship, explaining, to be eligible a student must meet high academic criteria including graduating high school in a Distinguished Achievement Program, attaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and being ranked in the top third of their overall graduating class.
To receive the scholarship, a student must not only be appointed by a State Representative, State Senator, the Governor or Lieutenant Governor, but they must also commit to remain in ROTC for four years, graduate within five years, and enter Guard service or accept a commission with the armed services within six months of graduation from college.
