SPEAKER STRAUS ANNOUNCES HOUSE APPOINTMENTS TO JOINT INTERIM COMMITTEE TO STUDY HUMAN TRAFFICKING
AUSTIN--- Texas House Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) today announced House appointments to the Joint Interim Committee to Study Human Trafficking. Speaker Straus has appointed Representative Senfronia Thompson (Houston) as co-chair of the committee. The committee members also include Representatives Cindy Burkett (Mesquite), Allen Fletcher (Tomball), John Frullo (Lubbock), Naomi Gonzalez (El Paso), Patricia Harless (Spring), and Todd Hunter (Corpus Christi).
"I am proud to appoint these House members to an important committee tasked with giving voice to victims of human trafficking," said Speaker Straus. "The Texas House will continue to work with law enforcement and human rights groups to end this tragedy."
Given the size and proximity to a major international border, Texas is often a focal point for human trafficking activity. The joint interim committee is charged with studying ways to combat this crime, identifying services available for victims of human trafficking in Texas including best practices for public-private partnerships providing services to those affected by human trafficking. The committee will also offer recommendations for the 2013 session. The committee was created by House Concurrent Resolution 68, passed during the 82nd Regular Legislative Session.
