Statement from Rep. Coleman on Proposed Senate Budget
Austin--Representative Garnet F. Coleman (Houston) released the following statement in response to the Texas Senate budget:
This budget is a disservice to the people of Texas. Just because the Senate's budget bill is slightly less detrimental than the House's doesn't make it acceptable. It's the lesser of two evils, but it's still terrible and it doesn't meet the needs of our state. Despite our growing population the proposed Senate budget leaves our state around $14 billion short of our current service levels.
We are ceding our responsibility to educate our children and care for vulnerable residents. The proposed Senate budget makes cuts to essential state services from which Texans may never recover. Texas hasn't recovered from the 2003 budget cuts and those were less than the cuts in the proposed Senate budget.
Quite frankly, no one would be cheering on this bill if it weren't compared to the disgraceful budget passed by the House. This is nothing more than a semblance of improvement.
Texas can do better.
Representative Coleman is available for comment.
