Deshotel Announces Funding for Local Academy

Money, Training to Benefit for More than 100

Austin-Representative Joe Deshotel (Beaumont) announced a $150,000 grant to benefit the Digital Workforce Academy, Inc. DBA: Golden Triangle Empowerment Center located in Port Arthur, TX. This grant would train 100 local high school students not going to college and unemployed workers to
become qualified in construction trades and allow them to receive a nationally recognized NCCER (National Center for Construction and Education Research) certification. The money will arrive within the next 30 days.

"At a time when people are losing jobs and the economy is on a downturn, this money will positively affect 100 participants, train them in life skills and equip them for sought-after jobs," Rep. Deshotel said. "I cannot stress enough how this will change the lives of real people, provide industry a readied work force, and pump money into the local economy,"

The grant, known as a Wagner-Peyser Grant, will be administered and monitored by the Texas Workforce Commission, (TWC) in partnership with the Digital Workforce Academy; which provides local human development and educational services. This program is a federally funded labor exchange developed to match up employers with qualified out-of-work applicants.

"Representative Deshotel was instrumental in bringing this money to benefit Southeast Texas," said Melvin White, founder of the academy. "Without his help, we would not be able to provide for high-school students and the unemployed, including those that want to improve their quality of life."

The Digital Workforce Academy will have to meet certain benchmarks, but has been successful in doing so in the past. Last year the academy trained over 180 people and help place over 140 in construction jobs to support the refinery expansion effort. The academy is continuing to seek additional
funding to ensure local citizens are able to take advantage of the economic growth.

"I would like to thank the local community for their demonstrated support, including the petrochemical industries and the state and executive offices that worked with me to get this money for to keep jobs in Southeast Texas," said Rep. Deshotel.
