Craddick establishes Select Committee to review Hurricane Ike damage, response
(Austin) – Speaker Tom Craddick today created a House Select Committee on Hurricane Ike Storm Devastation to the Texas Gulf Coast. The committee will be charged with reviewing the state and local government response to the hurricane and identifying issues for the legislature to address to prepare for future natural disasters and their aftermath.
"Having seen the damage of Hurricane Ike firsthand, I was awed by the size and scope of this disaster," Speaker Craddick said. "The issues facing our coastal communities are complex and will require not just increased resources, but a complete review of how our state handles natural disasters.
"The people of the Texas coast will rebuild as they always have, and it's our job to be there every step of the way, and to turn the lessons of Hurricane Ike into positive change for the future of Texas," Craddick said.
The Speaker has selected Representative Sylvester Turner of Houston as chairman of the committee and Representative John Davis, also of Houston, as vice chair. The speaker also appointed Representatives Dennis Bonnen (Angleton), Joe Deshotel (Beaumont) Harold Dutton (Houston), Craig Eiland (Galveston), Mike Hamilton (Mauriceville), Patricia Harless (Spring), Dora Olivo (Rosenberg), Debbie Riddle (Tomball), Wayne Smith (Baytown) and Larry Taylor (Friendswood). In addition, there will be one public member, A.R. "Babe" Schwartz.
"I am very honored to take on the task of reviewing the complex issues which surfaced during and as a result of Hurricane Ike," Rep. Turner said. "I look forward to listening and working with all impacted communities and developing well-thought-out recommendations that will enhance and create emergency preparation and response systems for the State of Texas that are responsive, inclusive and efficient."
