ZERWAS TO ATTEND NATIONAL MEETING ON HEALTH CARE REFORM
(AUSTIN) – Yesterday, Governor Rick Perry announced the appointment of Rep. John Zerwas (Katy) as a member of the Texas delegation to attend the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's State Coverage Initiatives (SCI) 2007 Coverage Institute in Chicago.
"I sincerely appreciate the confidence of Governor Perry in appointing me as a member of the Texas delegation to attend the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's State Coverage Initiatives (SCI) 2007 Coverage Institute in Chicago," Rep. Zerwas. "I look forward to serving in this capacity at a time when healthcare needs consume a significant portion of the Texas budget and the costs continue to grow. I am confident we can work to find comprehensive reform and common sense solutions to improve patient outcomes while controlling costs within the current Medicaid system."
SCI will be holding its second annual Coverage Institute, in Chicago, from September 26-28. The focus of this year's meeting will be to provide support to states that are considering substantial and comprehensive health insurance reform. SCI will assist state officials in understanding how certain reforms and decision-making processes will impact health care coverage systems in their home states, with the ultimate goal to reduce the number of uninsured. The program will also provide technical and financial support to state officials through the development and implementation of coverage expansion programs. Rep. Zerwas will attend a national meeting of the Institute with other leaders and staff from Texas.
"I congratulate Rep. Zerwas on this appointment," Speaker Tom Craddick (Midland) said. "The Texas delegation will benefit by having the perspective of an experienced physician like Rep. Zerwas, and I believe he will be a great addition for this conference."
Rep. Zerwas is in his first term as representative of District 28. He is the only physician serving in the House. Rep. Zerwas is a member of the Appropriations Committee, the House Administration Committee and serves as the chair of Budget and Oversight for the Land and Resource Management Committee.
