(RICHARDSON, TX) Today, the Committee on Economic and Small Business Development chaired by State Representative Angie Chen Button, held their first interim hearing following the 85th legislative session.

The hearing was held at the University of Texas at Dallas campus to discuss the state’s effectiveness in developing and growing high-growth, high-tech startups as well as to review current regulations and determine if barriers exist that potentially impede investment and growth. Additionally the committee heard testimony on the ongoing and long-term workforce needs of the state’s business and industries.

Prior to the hearing, Chairwoman Button stated, "As Texans, we have a great deal to be proud of. Although our economy is strong, we can do better. We must be diligent to stay ahead of the curve. I look forward to working to build on our past successes, learn from our mistakes, and to move forward to improve our state."

Currently, the Texas economy is the 10th largest among the nations of the world and has been the nation’s top exporting state for 16 years in a row with exports valued at $264 billion. The Lone Star State is home to 50 Fortune 500 headquarters. The state leads the nation in high tech exports totaling $46.9 billion, surpassing California by almost 8%. Additionally, over the last 10 years, Texas added more jobs than any state at 2.18 million.
