Chairman James White Proud to Support Program Funding for Local Libraries  print page

(Austin, TX) – State Representative James White is thankful to the Texas Commission on the Arts and their grant programs that benefit local rural libraries in Southeast Texas. The Commission recently approved funding that will benefit two programs at the Livingston Municipal Library.

Among these programs are "Read, Rock and Roll" and "Libraries Rock!" These programs will encourage young readers through songs and stories. "Both of these programs are of great benefit to Polk county and for the promotion of literacy in our Texas children. Hurricane Harvey devastated Southeast Texas and resulted in the loss of valuable classroom instructional time. These summer reading programs will provide children in Polk County engaging educational opportunities, while their parents continue their recovery towards normalcy during the summer months. “I remember my 5th grade teacher always reminding my classmates and I that readers are leaders. I applaud the Livingston Municipal Library for offering these children the tools needed to maintain a strong educational foundation," said Rep. White.

These programs work with the aim to encourage not only literacy but interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. For more information about these programs please visit www.livingstonlibrary.net.

Libraries in House District 19 are encouraged to participate and apply for these funds. The grant funds are funded quarterly with deadlines on August 1st, November 1st, February 1st, and May 1st of each year. Multiple requests for funding can be submitted that range from $75 to $8,000 with a limit of $12,000 per fiscal year (September-August).
