~ House Resolution by Chairman Price encourages increased Heart Health Awareness ~

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among adult Texans. Despite this fact, there are still too many myths about heart disease. One myth that needs to be quickly dispelled is the falsehood that it only affects men. The truth is that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), an estimated 44 million women in the United States are affected by cardiovascular diseases. Further, over 60 percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms. Another myth is that heart disease only affects older adults.

To raise awareness in combating heart disease, many organizations, including the American Heart Association, have events during the month of February to encourage persons to take an active part in their own heart health. To assist in this effort, Texas State Representative Four Price, chairman of the House Committee on Public Health, authored House Resolution 2683 during the 85th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature. Chairman Price’s resolution, adopted by the Texas House of Representatives, recognizes February 2018 as ‘American Heart Month in Texas’ and encourages Texans to do their part in preventing heart disease.

“February is the perfect month to raise overall awareness of potential heart disease and encourage specific individual attention to heart health given the celebration of Valentine’s Day. My hope is that everyone takes the time to love his/her very own heart by seriously thinking about heart health,” stated Representative Price.

To learn more in general about heart health visit the American Heart Association website at www.heart.org; the Texas Department of State Health Services website at www.dshs.texas.gov/heart/Texas-Heart-Disease-and-Stroke-Program---Home.aspx; and, regarding your own heart health, speak with your physician/health care provider.
