Chairman James White Urges Congress to Reauthorize CHIP  print page

by: Rep. White, James
12/18/2017

(Austin, TX) – State Representative James White is thankful to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for providing written assurance to the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) of available supplemental funding. CMS projected that the state would receive $135,848,929 in federal funds to cover the projected CHIP shortfall.

Rep. White had previously sent a letter to HHSC and Texas members of Congress urging them to work to maintain the program for Texas families. Due to these supplemental funds, CHIP will be able to be funded until February 2018. Now, Rep. White has once again written letters to Senator John Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, and Congressman Brian Babin urging them to lend their support to the CHIP program and approve its reauthorization.

“Especially now with so many Texans recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, I am extremely supportive of efforts to fund CHIP and prevent the uncertainty of health care coverage for Texas children. I am thankful to CMS and HHSC for working together to find the supplemental funding needed to continue to provide for these children during the Christmas season. Now it is time for Congress to take action by reauthorizing the CHIP program by February,” said Rep. White.
