February 6, 2017, Austin, TX: It is this time of year, rattlesnakes from Sweetwater, Texas travel to the Texas Capitol on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to promote the city’s 59th annual "World Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up."
The Sweetwater Jaycees put on annually what they call the "World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up" in the second weekend of March in Sweetwater. The Round-Up was started to control the enormous population of venomous snakes in their area of Texas. The over-population of rattlesnakes was causing harm to the local farmers and ranchers who were losing their livestock to these natural predators.
While at the Capitol, the Jaycees' presentation includes a discussion on snake safety, a snake "petting" where observers are given the chance to touch the snakes, a lesson on the life and behavior of snakes, and messages on how to act if one should encounter a snake.
Here is the schedule in the Capitol:
Monday, February 6: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Tuesday, February 7: 9:00 am to Noon, and 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Wednesday, February 8: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
The “World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up” will be held March 10, 11, 12 at the Nolan County Coliseum in Sweetwater, Texas. The Round-Up includes demonstrations, hands-on activities, food and retail vendors, a carnival, the Miss Snake Charmer Pageant, guided hunts, a gun and knife show, street dances, and contests.
