Denton County Legislator Ready for Challenges of 85th Legislative Session

AUSTIN - Shortly after noon on Tuesday, January 10, State Representative Ron Simmons took the oath of office for his third two-year term in the Texas House of Representatives. Simmons was among 150 State Representatives and 16 State Senators (out of 31 total Senators) who were sworn in yesterday, marking the first day of the 85th Legislative Session.

"It is truly an honor and a privilege to continue to serve the people of House District 65," said Simmons. "Ever since the day I first took the oath of office, my goal has been to consistently make decisions based on the values of my district, and to work tirelessly to study each issue from all perspectives. This will not change in the 85th Session."

Continuing its partnership with Governor Greg Abbott and a controlled Senate, the House looks forward to add to the conservative accomplishments of the 84th Legislative Session. Some major legislation Representative Simmons hopes to tackle is eliminating sanctuary cities in Texas, banning one punch straight party ticket voting, and providing educational choice for children with special needs.

Despite the unknowns that come with lower revenues this year, Simmons is excited about the possibilities the new session holds. House District 65, located in the southeast corner of Denton County, serves portions of the cities of Carrollton, Lewisville, Highland Village, Dallas, and Coppell.

"Our biennial session gives us the ability to face head-on the challenges that everyday Texans face," Simmons said, "I feel renewed energy to go to work on behalf of my constituents."

The Texas State Legislature convenes biennially (every other year) for a 140-day long regular session. Among the chief responsibilities of the Legislature during this time is to pass a balanced state budget, as required by the Texas Constitution.
